Estamos tan acostumbrados a ver la corona de laurel que se nos olvida que no es solo un accesorio bohemio: la corona de laurel tiene una rica historia que se remonta al mundo clásico antiguo.

Desde la antigüedad, la forma circular o de herradura de la corona ha sido un símbolo de gloria, poder y eternidad. Los antiguos egipcios, por ejemplo, llevaban un tipo de corona como tocado hecha solo de flores y recibía el nombre de guirnalda. En cambio, en la antigua Grecia y Roma, muchas coronas estaban hechas de lana y hojas como el mirto o la hiedra, y estaban adornadas con diferentes flores, a las que se les daban diversas asociaciones a través del tiempo.

Los antiguos griegos introdujeron por primera vez la corona de laurel (Laurus nobilis) como recompensa honorífica para los vencedores en concursos deportivos, militares, poéticos y musicales. De hecho, el laurel tenía dos significados distintos: literal y simbólico. Al florecer de manera temprana y ser de hoja perenne, el laurel representa la victoria como algo duradero, mientras que las flores representan el respeto por los muertos, en forma de ofrenda, algo que se viene haciendo desde la antigüedad. Además, el laurel es originario de la región mediterránea, y se erigió como un símbolo importante de victoria, logro y estatus.

Los antiguos romanos continuaron la tradición de la corona como recompensa por el triunfo. Vistieron a sus líderes y al personal militar con coronas de laurel, roble o mirto.

Los dioses y diosas antiguos eran representados a menudo en el arte y la literatura con plantas específicas dedicadas a ellos. En las metamorfosis de Ovidio, la bella ninfa Dafne logra escapar de su perseguidor, el dios Apolo, convirtiéndose en un árbol de laurel. Apolo corta una rama del árbol y exclama: «Aunque no puedas ser mi esposa, al menos serás mi árbol; te llevaré siempre en mi pelo, en mi aljaba, oh Laurel». (557–559). Él mantiene su palabra, y como resultado a menudo es representado usando una corona de laurel como símbolo de su amor por Dafne. Apolo es el dios de los poetas y escritores, y el término poeta laureado que utilizamos hoy en día proviene de este mito.

Aunque las coronas de hojas y flores eran populares en el mundo antiguo, a medida que el cristianismo se extendió cayó en desgracia debido a su asociación con las fiestas paganas. Pero volvió a aparecer en el arte renacentista, ya que los artistas y estudiosos volvieron a mirar al pasado clásico en busca de inspiración.

En la actualidad es normal ver a menudo coronas de flores usadas como un recordatorio del antiguo mundo mediterráneo y símbolo de la antigua herencia de sus sujetos. Así es como el simbolismo de la corona de laurel ha perdurado hasta nuestros días: en los Juegos Olímpicos que se celebraron en 2004 en Atenas, Grecia entregó coronas de laurel a los ganadores, para recordar ese pasado glorioso, y fue diseño de las medallas para las Olimpiadas de Río de Janeiro 2016.

En algunos países, la corona de laurel se sigue utilizando como premio y como símbolo de excelencia entre los alumnos cuando concluyen sus estudios universitarios. La corona se entrega a los jóvenes en la ceremonia de graduación.
